12-06-07 NSWIB Presents Donations to HAWC At the December Holiday meeting, NSWIB presented a check for $2,000 to Candace Waldron of HAWC (Home for Abused Women and their Children). The check was funded by proceeds of our annual event which was held in March of 2007. Members also generously donated gifts and gift certificates as listed on the HAWC Wish List. 11-04-07: Michelle Little of Juice Plus+ Promoted
Michelle Little of Juice Plus+/ Fountain of Health was recently promoted to the top position of National Marketing Director. She was honored at the National Convention in Memphis, TN which was attended by over 6000 distributors worldwide. The company behind Juice Plus+ is National Safety Associates, founded by President Jay Martin in 1970. NSA operates in over 20 countries including: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Isreal, Japan, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Juice Plus+ is the top selling encapsulated product in the world and the most researched nutritional product in history. 11-01-07: Membership Drive Winner! Ruth Sheets, owner of Ducks In A Row Consulting, is the lucky winner of an overnight stay at the lovely Emerson Inn by the Sea in Rockport, MA. Ruth recruited two new members during the September/October Membership Drive. Congratulations, Ruth and thank you for your efforts! 10-18-07: Nancy D'Anna, D'Anna Imaging, Revealed as NSWIB's 2007 Business Makeover Recipient Nancy D'Anna, photographer and owner of D'Anna Imaging in Saugus, MA, was "revealed" at the NSWIB annual installation dinner as the 2007 Business Makeover Recipient. She spoke to attendees about her experience working with the Extreme Team who donated their services to help her take her business to the next level. Earlier in the year, The North Shore Women in Business Extreme Makeover Committee selected seven service providers based on the needs of our Makeover Recipient, Nancy, who was selected from approximately a dozen applicants. Team selection required that providers were active members of NSWIB for a minimum of one year and with an business established for at least two years. Each Extreme Team member spent 10 to 12 individual hours with Nancy throughout a six month period to help her achieve her business makeover goals.
The Extreme Makeover Team Members were: Gloria Bakst, Balanced Nutritional Lifestyle Associates; Judy Christine Copp, A Higher Balance; Lesley Denny, LDenny Consulting; Sallie Felton, Sallie Felton Life Coach; Laurie LaBrie, Integrated Staffing; Lana Rudym, Lana Rudym Interiors; and Ruth Sheets, Ducks in a Row Consulting. The Team members were presented certificates of appreciation and were thanked by Nancy for their assistance, support and encouragement which resulted in a successful makeover for her. 10-18-07: NSWIB Installs Directors and Officers for 2007/2008 At the annual installation dinner on October 18th at the Danversport Yachtclub, 2006/2007 President Ruth Sheets, Ducks in a Row Consulting, gave her farewell remarks and thanked current Board members for their support during her term. She also thanked outgoing Board members, Ginny Maglio of Optimum Development and Mary Ann Sarno of Quality Caskets and Services, Inc., for their years of dedication and service and presented each with a gift. Ruth then introduced our new President for 2007/2008, Joanne Schamberg of Promotional Solutions. Following the "passing of the gavel", President Joanne introduced the officers for the 2007/20087 year: Lisa Schanko, BankNorth, First Vice President; Rosaleen Doherty, Second Vice President; Mariflor Uva, NetAtlantic, Treasurer; Maureen Safer, Danversbank, Secretary; Ruth Sheets, Ducks in a Row Consulting, Past President. The Directors were also introduced and each was presented with an appreciation of service plaque: Natasha Astrom, Beverly National Bank; Marisa Cole, Sensational Travel; Carla Cox, Handley, Cox and Moorman; Nancy D'Anna, D'Anna Imaging; Sallie Felton, Sallie Felton Life Coach; Diane Fortune, Keller Williams Coastal Realty; Carol Fournier, RenCoor; Susan Gaskell, Gazelle Strategic Partners & Sea Change Enterprise; Michelle Little, Fountain of Health; Grace Martins, Martins Senior Home Care; Kerri Moses, Commonwealth Financial Network; Carol Sanger, The Web Division. Director will either continue or begin their three year terms. The NSWIB Officers and Board of Directors are dedicated to serving the NSWIB mission which is to foster opportunities for businesswomen to develop professionally and personally through networking, educational and social functions. 08-23-07: Congressman John F. Tierney meets with the Board of Directors for North Shore Women in Business
On Thursday, August 23, 2007, U.S. Representative John F. Tierney met with the Board of Directors of North Shore Women in Business to discuss congressional initiatives that impact small business owners.
Congressman Tierney led the question and answer discussion regarding topics on health care reform and on various proposed bills that would provide for health care for every American as well as control costs while enhancing the quality of the health care system. "I appreciated the opportunity to meet with the North Shore Women in Business (NSWIB) Board members. We all recognize that in order to create successful businesses we must invest in our communities and grow our economy. Having been a small businessperson for over twenty years, I certainly appreciate the challenges facing today's small business owners. I share the NSWIB's commitment to providing quality health care to employees, making higher education more affordable, and restoring ethical business practices in the wake of repeated corporate scandals. I shall continue working on these issues knowing that NSWIB agrees on their importance," said Congressman John Tierney. Ruth A. Sheets, President of North Shore Woman in Business and owner of Ducks in a Row Consulting in Newburyport pointed out that, "Congressman Tierney is keenly aware of the issues we as women and small business entrepreneurs face as we grow our businesses in today's marketplace. We were impressed with his frank discussion of a wide array of government initiatives that affect not only our members but also other women in the workplace. We appreciate the work he is doing on our behalf."

06-21-07: Spirit of NSWIB Awards LuncheonOn June 21, 2007, we honored our outstanding volunteers and long-standing members at our first Spirit of North Shore Women in Business Awards luncheon. We recognized and thanked the 33 volunteers whose remarkable commitment and tireless dedication contribute to the success of NSWIB. Many of these volunteers serve on multiple committees. 05-24-07: Natasha Astrom Receives Board AppointmentRuth A. Sheets, President of North Shore Women in Business, recently appointed Natasha Astrom, Vice-President and Business Development Officer of Beverly National Bank, to the Board of Directors. She replaces departing Board member, Diane Langlais whose term expires September 30, 2008. The Board of Directors welcomed Ms. Astrom at the May 24, 2007 Board meeting.

10-19-06: NSWIB 2006-2007 Officers & Board of Directors InductedAt the October 19th annual meeting the new NSWIB Officers and Board of Directors were inducted for the new year fiscal year.
Additionally, outgoing board members were thank and presented with gifts of appreciation. The following members were honored for the years of service: Joanne Fortunato, Catherine Bayliss, Jeannette Sullivan, Brenda Truehaft, Cathy Julian, Marilyn Censullo, Roz Lanutti, and Fran Dichner.
Carol Sanger, who served 18 months as president officially passed the gavel to president Ruth Sheets.
10-19-06: NSWIB EXTREME TEAM RECIPIENT IS REVEALED AT LAST!On October 19th at Jimmy's Allenhurst, the NSWIB Extreme Makeover Recipient was revealed after six months of secrecy. Grace Martins of Martins Senior Homecare, was revealed at the annual dinner meeting and spoke about her experience with 15 team members who donated their time and expertise.
The team members donated many hours during the six month phase and some will continue to help Grace as the finishing touches are finalized. Services were provided by NSWIB members and are estimated to exceed $15,000 in value. Grace received a variety of personal and business services for a more holistic approach to her business makeover.
Grace was selected from approximately a dozen candidates that submitted essays earlier in the year. The committee, headed by Carol Mouradian of Mary Kay Cosmetics and Ginny Maglio of Optimum Development, helped manage this first of it's kind event and are preparing to announce the next event before the end of the year.
11-15-06: NSWIB Sponsors Million Dollar Women Symposium at The Enterprise Center at Salem State CollegeNovember 15th marks the return of another Million Dollar Women Symposium and NSWIB is once again a sponsor. From 8:30 to Noon women can hear from successful women and learn more about how they achieved their success.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Evelyn Murphy, former Lt. 10-26-06: NSWIB is Participating Sponsor of the 6th Annual North of Boston Businesswomen of the Year Lydia Pinkham Awards Luncheon
On October 26th, NSWIB President Ruth Sheets and Past President Carol Sanger attended the North of Boston Businesswomen of the Year Awards Luncheon at the North Shore Community College Campus in Lynn MA. This year NSWIB was a participating sponsor for the event for which 21 women were nominated. One of our own NSWIB members, Elaine Champagne of NSCC, was a winner for the non-profit category award. Elaine, surprised to be chosen, graciously accepted her award to the delight of co-workers and her husband.
The keynote speaker was Cheryl A. LaFleur, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of National Grid’s U.S. energy distribution business, which delivers electricity to 3.3 million customers in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, and gas to 800,000 customers in New York and Rhode Island. Ms. LaFleur’s primary responsibilities include customer operations, engineering and asset management, dispatch and emergency operations, and safety. Her previous positions with National Grid and its predecessors over the past 20 years have included president of New England distribution, general counsel, and vice president of retail marketing. The North of Boston Businesswomen of the Year Awards are presented in honor of Lydia (Estes) Pinkham, who was born in Lynn in 1819. She was a teacher as well as an early advocate of women’s rights and the abolition of slavery. In 1875, Lydia began selling her homemade remedy — Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound — which was billed as “a positive cure for all those painful complaints and weaknesses so common to our best female population.†The business became a phenomenal success both while she was living and after her death in 1883.
